AFCD reminds public not to feed monkeys
Wednesday, June 26, 2002
The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) today (June 26) reminded members of the public not to feed wild monkeys.
The appeal was made following two court cases in which three men were fined $800 each for feeding wild monkeys without special permit in May at the Kam Shan Country Park.
A spokesman for AFCD said,"Human feeding of monkeys has resulted in unnatural growth in monkey population. Monkeys are becoming aggressive to visitors and threaten them for food.
"Therefore, a ban on feeding wild monkeys and wild animals has been implemented since 1999. Feeding activities are prohibited at the Lion Rock, Kam Shan and Shing Mun Country Parks; part of Tai Mo Shan Country Park; Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve; Caldecott Road; and the Piper's Hill section of Tai Po Road.
"The feeding ban is a measure to reduce monkey nuisances and attacks to the public. It also helps to curb the unnatural growth of population of monkeys and help them reinstate their skill to forage in the wild."
Notices have been placed at various locations to remind the public not to feed wild monkeys. Any person contravening the feeding restriction will be liable to a maximum fine of $10,000 upon conviction.
