Red tide sightings report
Friday, June 28, 2002

An inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (June 28) two red tide sightings within Hong Kong waters to keep the public informed of the latest monitoring situation.

A spokesman for the working group said the red tide sightings were observed on June 24 by staff of the Environmental Protection Department in waters off northeastern part and southern part of Lantau Island.

The red tide was formed by Skeletonema costatum. It had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and was non-toxic. The red tide still persisted today.

The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on the mariculture industry.
