Red tide sightings report
Friday, July 26, 2002
An inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (July 26) two red tide sightings within Hong Kong waters to keep the public informed of the latest monitoring situation.
A spokesman for the working group said red tide was observed by staff of the Environmental Protection Department at West Lamma Channel and waters off the southern part of Lantau Island on July 24 and 25 respectively.
The red tide was formed by Chaetoceros pseudocurvisetus. The species was non-toxic and was rare in Hong Kong waters. The red tide still persisted today.
The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon. AFCD's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on the mariculture industry.
