Recreational fishing trial scheme at fish culture zone
Friday, August 16, 2002

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) today (August 16) issued a letter of consent for the first time to a mariculturist at Yung Shue Au fish culture zone for running a recreational fishing business.

"In view of a growing demand for recreational fishing facilities and the wish of some mariculturists to arrange visitors to conduct recreational fishing activities in their fish rafts, AFCD is running a recreational fishing trial scheme in Yung Shue Au fish culture zone.

"We have informed licencees of fish rafts in this fish culture zone that they can apply for conducting recreational fishing activities," a spokesman for AFCD said.

He said that mariculturists conducting recreational fishing activities must continue using their rafts for normal mariculture operation. They have to ensure that the fishing activities will not cause pollution to the waters or interfere the operation of other rafts within the fish culture zone.

The mariculturists should also ensure that the facilities and operation of the fish rafts meet the standards listed in the safety certification issued by marine surveyors.

AFCD will step up inspection at these rafts during the trial period to check whether all the necessary safety measures have been adopted, and the impact of recreational fishing activities to the environment of the fish culture zone.
