AFCD organises agricultural study tour
Tuesday, September 3, 2002

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) will organise an agricultural study tour for farmers to visit the Netherlands and Spain on September 8.

The Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation, Mr Thomas Chan, hopes that the participants would make use of the opportunity to broaden their scope of knowledge for the development of the local farming industry.

Speaking at a ceremony to present a banner to the delegation today (September 3), Mr Chan said the participants could learn the latest farming technologies during their visit to these two places.

"The local farming industry has been facing keen competition with other places. We have to make use of our limited land resources to produce high-valued crops in order to enhance our competitiveness.

"The delegation will study the use of greenhouse and intensive production techniques in the Netherlands and Spain in producing premium crops. I hope that delegates will learn these new techniques with a view to promoting the cultivation of premium vegetables in Hong Kong and exploring new fronts in developing the local farming industry," Mr Chan said.

The 11-day study tour will focus on greenhouse techniques, intensive production methods, crop packaging and wholesaling systems.

The 23-member delegation includes local farmers, members of the Marketing Advisory Board and AFCD officials.

The study tour is organised with the assistance of the Consulate General of the Netherlands Agriculture and Food Department, and relevant authorities in the Netherlands and Spain.
