Organic Standard and Certification System
Wednesday, November 27, 2002

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department has approved from the Agricultural Development Fund about $3.9 million for establishing an Organic Resource Centre with a view to developing an organic standard and certification system.

The Vegetable Marketing Organisation (VMO) will coordinate the project. The Baptist University, Organic Farming Association and Produce Green Foundation will help to draw up details of the project. A contract signing ceremony was held today (November 27) between VMO and the three non-profit making organisations.

The project aims at establishing an organic standard and an organic certification programme, and producing a certification operation manual within 3 years.

In addition, the Centre will provide a web-based database on organic products, standards and certification programme. It will also organise training programme for organic inspectors and introduce certification label.
