Red tide sighting report
Friday, December 13, 2002
An inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (December 13) a red tide sighting within Hong Kong waters to keep the public informed of the latest monitoring situation.
A spokesman for the working group said the red tide was observed by staff of the Environmental Protection Department at Deep Water Bay Beach on December 11.
he red tide was formed by Phaeocystis globosa. The species had not been sighted in Hong Kong waters before. The red tide was dissipating.
The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) had informed mariculturists of Lo Tik Wan and Sok Kwu Wan fish culture zones on the occurrence of the red tide. No associated fish kill was reported.
he spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon. AFCD's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on the mariculture industry.
