AFCD expands vaccination programme on chickens
Monday, December 23, 2002
The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) will expand the vaccination programme currently carried out in chicken farms in Pak Sha to farms in the vicinity to better evaluate the role of vaccination in the control of H5 avian influenza.
"Starting today, AFCD staff will commence the expanded vaccination programme in chicken farms covered within some five kilometres of Pak Sha.
"With the number of vaccinated farms increased by about four-fold to 80, it will facilitate us to gather more data to evaluate the effectiveness of vaccine under local conditions," a spokesman for AFCD said today (December 23).
The vaccination programme is currently being carried out in 21 chicken farms in Pak Sha on a trial basis for 12 months from April this year as a supplementary measure to control the spread of avian influenza.
"So far, the study results show that the vaccine currently being used in Hong Kong can help prevent mortality and disease associated with local strains of H5 virus in vaccinated chickens.
"AFCD will continue to monitor the vaccination programme and analyse the results of the expanded trial scheme," the spokesman said.
