Gene sequencing result of Penfold samples
Thursday, January 2, 2003

The gene sequencing analysis of the H5 virus isolated from the waterfowl at the Penfold Park showed that they were H5N1 virus but not the type that affected humans in 1997.

The finding was released by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) today (January 2).

"The gene sequencing tests showed that the H5N1 virus that was found in the waterfowl samples at the Penfold Park in December last year do not share the same combination of genes as the H5N1 virus that affected human beings in 1997.

"The AFCD will continue to conduct gene sequencing tests of other samples found in birds at Kowloon Park and a farm in Ta Kwu Ling," an AFCD spokesman said.

Meanwhile, trading has resumed at the Cheung Sha Wan Temporary Wholesale Poultry Market this morning, with more than 162,000 chickens sold.
