Red tide sighting report
Friday, January 10, 2003

An inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (January 10) two red tide sightings within Hong Kong waters to keep the public informed of the latest monitoring situation.

A spokesman for the working group said a red tide was observed by staff of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) at Kat O Hoi on January 7.

The red tide was formed by Mesodinium rubrum. It dissipated on January 9.

Another red tide was observed by staff of the Civil Engineering Department at Shing Mun River on January 8. The red tide was formed by Prorocentrum minimum. It still persisted today.

The two species of red tide had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and were non-toxic. AFCD had informed mariculturists of Kat O fish culture zone on the occurrence of red tide in nearby waters. No associated fish kill was reported.

The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon. AFCD's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on the mariculture industry.
