AFCD disposes of culled chickens at Pat Heung farm
Friday, January 10, 2003

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) helped to dispose of chickens culled by the owner of the quarantined farm at Pat Heung today (January 10).

The farm has been put under quarantine after two dead chickens and two swab samples tested positive for H5 avian influenza virus on January 6.

"The farmer decided to cull the remaining 9,000 suspected infected chickens in the three sheds where dead chickens were found. AFCD staff helped to remove the chickens for disposal at landfill.

"Some 40,000 chickens in other sheds have been vaccinated in a bid to control the spread of the virus. Vaccination was also introduced to eight farms close to the quarantined farm," a spokesman for the AFCD said.

The department will continue monitoring closely the vaccinated chickens in the quarantined farm and the nearby farms. Enforcement of biosecurity measures in the farms has also been stepped up.
