Red tide sighting report
Friday, March 7, 2003

An inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (March 7) a red tide sighting within Hong Kong waters to keep the public informed of the latest monitoring situation.

A spokesman for the working group said the red tide was observed by staff of the Environmental Protection Department at Shing Mun River, Sha Tin on March 3.

The red tide was formed by Prorocentrum minimum. It had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and was non-toxic. The red tide dissipated on March 5.

The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on the mariculture industry.
