Red tide sighting report
Friday, April 4, 2003
A red tide has been sighted in Hong Kong waters, an inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (April 4).
A spokesman for the working group said the red tide was observed by staff of Ocean Park at Deep Water Bay on April 2. It was still present today.
The red tide was formed by Noctiluca scintillans, which has been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and is non-toxic.
Red tide is a natural phenomenon. The spokesman said the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department's proactive comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring programme would continue monitoring red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry.
