New mountain biking trail for Tai Lam Country Park
Monday, April 21, 2003

A new mountain biking trail will be opened tomorrow (April 22) at Tai Lam Country Park by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department.

The nine-kilometre Siu Lam Mountain Bike Trail links up the existing Ho Pui Mountain Bike Trail to Siu Lam. A large portion of the trail is forest track used by the department to facilitate country park management and hill fire fighting.

"Considering the high usage of this trail by hikers during Sundays and public holidays, mountain biking will not be allowed on these days to avoid conflict with other visitors," a spokesman for the department said.

With the increasing popularity of mountain biking, the department is constantly reviewing the situation and considering recommendations for new trails. The opening of this new trail will test the suitability of forest tracks for cycling. This has been endorsed by the Country Parks Committee of the Country and Marine Parks Board.

Those interested in cycling on this and 10 other designated mountain bike trails must apply for a cycling permit. Application forms are available on the department's website and at its headquarters, 5/F, Cheung Sha Wan Government Offices, 303 Cheung Sha Wan Road, Kowloon. No permit fee will be charged.

Group applications or applicants under the age of 12 will not be accepted. Applicants aged between 12 and 18 should ask their parents or guardians to endorse their applications.

The spokesman reminded permit holders to observe the code of practice for cyclists and comply with safety requirements, including standard helmets, colourful jerseys, suitable shoes, sturdily built bikes with effective braking systems, horns or bells and tyres not less than 4.5cm in width.

Details of mountain biking trails are available on the department's country and marine parks website at http://parks.afcd.gov.hk/newparks/eng/country/bicycle/index.htm.
