Cleaning of country parks stepped up
Wednesday, April 30, 2003
Various measures have been taken by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department to step up cleaning country parks in view of the increasing number of visitors.
A spokesman for the department said today (April 30) that the department had deployed more staff to collect litter and extended the working hours to 8pm at some popular sites.
"We have increased the frequency of cleaning and disinfecting flushing toilets with the provision of more toilet paper and liquid soap," the spokesman said. "For mobile toilets, six working groups have been formed to provide additional cleaning services on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Desludging of these toilets at some popular country parks has also been stepped up on weekends.
"Park rangers have also stepped up patrolling popular sites. Of the 60 prosecutions we made since April 1 on hygiene issues, 52 were related to littering and one to spitting," he said.
From April 1 to 28, about 1.4 million visitors were recorded in country parks, an increase of 75% compared with the same period last year. The most popular country parks include Sai Kung, Plover Cove and Lantau with a record of some 280,000, 190,000 and 140,000 visitors respectively.
The spokesman reminded visitors to keep the countryside clean by putting litter in the rubbish bins. He said posters and notice boards had been put up at various sites to remind visitors of the "keep clean" message. The message is also posted on some hiking websites.
