Red tide sighted at Tolo Harbour
Friday, May 9, 2003

A red tide was observed by a member of the public at Tolo Harbour near Wu Kai Sha yesterday (May 8), an inter-departmental red tide working group said. The red tide had dissipated by today.

The red tide was formed by Noctiluca scintillans. It has been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and is non-toxic.

Red tide is a natural phenomenon. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department's proactive phytoplankton monitoring programme will continue monitoring red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry.
