Students invited to join endangered species drawing contes
Saturday, May 24, 2003
Primary and secondary school students are invited to join an Endangered Species Protection Drawing Contest organised by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD).
"Some species of wild fauna and flora are at the brink of extinction because of habitat destruction and over-exploitation for international trade. The drawing contest aims at enhancing public awareness of endangered species protection for sustainable use of these rare resources.
"As a joint effort to monitor trading of wild fauna and flora, a similar drawing contest will be held in Guangdong Province for Mainland students. It is the first time that publicity events on endangered species protection are being organised in the two places at the same time," a spokesman for AFCD said today (May 24).
The drawing competition is open to primary and secondary students. Entries may cover any topics related to endangered species protection. The results will be announced in August.
Trophies will be given to the first three winners of each group, who will also receive book coupons worth $1,000 to $3,000. Schools with the greatest number of participants will be awarded a book coupon of $5,000.
The winning entries in Hong Kong and Guangdong Province will be displayed in roving exhibitions in both places.
Details of and entry forms for the contest are available on the AFCD Endangered Species Protection Division's website at www.cites.org.hk. Entries should be submitted in person to AFCD headquarters, 5/F, Cheung Sha Wan Government Offices, 303 Cheung Sha Wan Road, Kowloon on or before July 19.
