Country park toilets upgraded
Saturday, June 14, 2003

Twenty-eight public toilets and 27 toilets for the disabled in country parks have been upgraded as part of an improvement programme to enhance services.

"We are dedicated to upgrading country park services to cope with the increasing number of visitors. The improvement programme, covering a total of 33 public toilets and 29 toilets for the disabled, is aimed at improving the hygiene of toilets in country parks," a spokesman for the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department said today (June 14).

Hand-washing facilities have been relocated outside the toilets to keep the floor clean. For toilets at some popular country parks, sink benches have been installed outside the toilets with the provision of more taps.

Honeycomb grille blocks are now fitted at upper levels of the toilets to improve ventilation and glass blocks have been fixed to the upper walls to enhance natural lighting.

"The improvement works of toilets at some popular sites such as Pak Tam Chung, Shing Mun and Tai Mei Tuk have been completed. We will build more public toilets in Sai Kung and Tai Lam Country Parks to better serve our visitors.

"The public is welcome to forward proposals on ways to improve the cleanliness of country parks to the department for consideration. Proposals can be made by e-mail (cpark@afcd.gov.hk), fax (2317 0482) or hotline (1823)," he said.

Meanwhile, the department has also stepped up cleaning work in country parks. More workers have been deployed to collect litter and their patrolling hours at popular sites have been extended.

Fifty-three and 83 fixed penalty notices were issued for littering in country parks in April and May respectively. Two people were fined for spitting in these two months.

The spokesman reminded visitors to keep the countryside clean by putting litter in rubbish bins or taking it away. The department stressed that it would not tolerate visitors littering and spitting in country parks. Offenders will be prosecuted immediately or given fixed penalty notices.
