Red tide sighting report
Friday, June 27, 2003
A red tide was observed by staff of the Environmental Protection Department in waters off Tseung Kwan O on June 25, an inter-departmental red tide working group said.
The red tide was formed by Skeletonema costatum and Chaetoceros curvisetus. They have been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and are non-toxic.
Red tide is a natural phenomenon. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department's proactive phytoplankton monitoring programme will continue monitoring red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry.
