Red tide sighting report
Friday, August 22, 2003

A red tide was observed by a mariculturist at Kat O fish culture zone on August 19, an inter-departmental red tide working group said today (August 22).

The red tide was formed by Scrippsiella trochoidea. It has been sighted in Hong Kong waters before and is non-toxic. The red tide still persisted today.

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department informed other mariculturists of Kat O, O Pui Tong and Sha Tau Kok fish culture zones about the occurrence of red tide and reminded them of the possibility of oxygen depletion in the water. No associated fish kill was reported.

Red tide is a natural phenomenon. The department's proactive phytoplankton monitoring programme will continue monitoring red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry.
