Red tide sighting report
Friday, November 14, 2003
A red tide was sighted in Hong Kong waters this week, an inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (November 14).
Staff of the Civil Engineering Department observed a red tide at Shing Mun River on November 10. It started dissipating yesterday.
"The red tide was formed by Prorocentrum balticum and Prorocentrum minimum," a spokesman for the working group said. "Procrocentrum balticum is rare in Hong Kong waters while Prorocentrum minimum had been sighted in Hong Kong waters before. Both species are non-toxic."
Red tide is a natural phenomenon. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department's proactive phytoplankton monitoring programme will continue monitoring red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry.
