FMO to manage Aberdeen seafood wholesale market as scheduled
Friday, November 28, 2003

The Fish Marketing Organisation (FMO) will take over the management of the seafood wholesale market at the carpark of the Aberdeen promenade as scheduled on Monday (December 1).

"To protect public health, FMO will take over the management of the seafood wholesale market at the Aberdeen promenade as scheduled," a spokesman for the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department said.

FMO will be responsible for the management of the wholesale market. Operators of the seafood stalls must apply for a licence from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD). The arrangements would enable the operators to meet the hygiene requirements and the authorities to regularise seafood wholesale trading activities in a more efficient manner.

"Under FMO's management, the incumbent wholesalers are required to operate under a hygienic environment, including the use of hygienic seawater. They have to install recirculatory filtration and disinfection facilities for their water tanks to meet FEHD's requirements.

"Wholesalers are reminded not to draw water from the typhoon shelter for keeping fish. FMO will deploy staff to patrol the site. Anyone who fails to comply with the requirements will not be allowed to operate in the market," the spokesman said.

FMO is currently in discussion with the wholesalers over the rental level. FMO will take into consideration many factors including the market operating costs, the physical conditions of the market and the current rentals of other FMO markets.

The views of the wholesalers will also be taken into account. FMO hopes to continue negotiations with them on the market rentals. It is also prepared to waive the rental for the first month (December).
