New vegetable variety introduced to local farmers
Friday, December 11, 1998
Local farmers have shown great interest in growing an exotic vegetable variety, coloured sweet pepper, after attending a seminar held at Tai Lung Experimental Station today (Friday).
An Agricultural Officer Mr Ng Yeung-shing pointed out that coloured sweet pepper was suitable for cultivation in Hong Kong during the cooler months.
He said: "Trial cultivation by AFD and a few selected farmers indicates that the variety is well-adapted to the environment of Hong Kong.
"It has a long harvest duration of at least three to four months and can fetch a fairly high market price.
"Local farmers can therefore make use of this cool season to cultivate coloured sweet pepper to increase the source of fresh supply in local markets and to expand the locally-produced vegetable varieties."
Noting that coloured sweet pepper had been widely used in western dishes, Mr Ng was confident that it would become a popular vegetable in Chinese-style cooking.
"Coloured sweet pepper, with its distinctive sweet taste, is fit for various cooked or raw recipes. Besides, its green, yellow, orange, ivory or red colour makes it an attractive and useful ingredient.
The half-day seminar, jointly organised by the Agriculture and Fisheries Department (AFD) and the Federation of Vegetable Marketing Cooperative Societies, was one of the continued efforts to transfer technical know-how and expertise to local farmers.
During the seminar, AFD's staff gave talk and slide show on the cultivation method, pest and disease control measures, as well as market situation of coloured sweet pepper.
This was followed by a field visit where participants learned more about production techniques. A tasting panel was also arranged to try the salad prepared from different varieties of coloured sweet pepper.
