Red tide sighted at Silverstrand Beach
Friday, March 19, 2004
A red tide has been sighted in Hong Kong waters in the past few days, an inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (March 19).
Staff of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department observed the appearance of a red tide at Silverstrand Beach from March 14 to 19. The red flag was hoisted during the above period. The red tide is dissipating.
"The red tide was formed by Trichodesmium erythraeum, which is rare in Hong Kong waters. Though itching and burning upon contact with skin have been reported elsewhere, this kind of reaction has not been recorded in Hong Kong," a spokesman for the working group said.
The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) confirmed that no red tide had been observed at Po Toi O and Tung Lung, the two nearby fish culture zones.
Red tide is a natural phenomenon. The AFCD's proactive phytoplankton monitoring programme will continue monitoring red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry.
