AFCD releases fish fingerlings in marine parks
Thursday, June 10, 2004
The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) is releasing
16,000 fish fingerlings this week to enhance fisheries resources in Hong
Kong waters.
AFCD Assistant Director (Fisheries) Mr Cheung Man-kwong said today (June
10) that it was the fourth time in five years that the department conducted
fish fingerlings release.
Fifteen thousand green grouper fingerlings of 2 inches and 4 inches,
and 1,000 high-finned grouper fingerlings of 4 inches are being released
in artificial reefs at marine parks and north eastern waters.
"We learnt from past release trials that groupers are suitable species
for fry release to enhance fisheries resources in the artificial reefs
areas," Mr Cheung said.
"We have selected artificial reefs as the releasing sites because they
provide a suitable habitat for shelter and protection."
"To prevent depleting natural fingerling resources, artificially propagated
fingerlings are used."
The exercise aims to assess the cost-effectiveness of releasing smaller
size green grouper fingerlings and see whether some rare and high-valued
species such as high-finned grouper can be reintroduced into Hong Kong
waters by restocking.
Pre-release surveys have been conducted to collect the baseline data
on the release sites. Post-release surveys will also be carried out at
regular intervals to assess the effectiveness of the release.
The Hong Kong SAR and the Guangdong authorities are making joint efforts
to enhance fisheries resources in local waters. In parallel, Guangdong
is releasing fish fingerlings in Mirs Bay close to the border area in
the north eastern waters.
