Crows unlikely to be source of Japanese encephalitis
Wednesday, July 7, 2004
In response to media enquiries, a spokesman for the Agriculture, Fisheries
and Conservation Department (AFCD) said today (July 7) that crows were
not considered a source of the Japanese encephalitis virus.
"The level and duration of the virus in the blood of infected crows
is likely to be too small to permit infection by mosquitoes and they would
be considered as dead-end hosts like humans," the spokesman said.
In view of the nuisance caused by crows to the public, the AFCD has
stepped up measures to control the crow population in Sham Shui Po.
