Red tide sighting
Friday, August 6, 2004

A red tide had been sighted in Hong Kong waters in the past few days, an inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (August 6).

Fishermen at the Sham Wan Fish Culture Zone observed a red tide at the zone on August 3. The red tide is dissipating.

"The red tide is formed by Prorocentrum micans. This is common in Hong Kong waters and the species is non-toxic," a working group spokesman said.

Red tide is a natural phenomenon. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department's proactive phytoplankton monitoring programme will continue monitoring red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry.
