Red tides sighted
Friday, August 13, 2004

Two red tides have been sighted in Hong Kong waters in the past few days, an inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (August 13).

Staff of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) observed a red tide at Tolo Harbour on August 7 which dissipated the following day, and another one at Kat O Hoi and Tap Mun on August 9 which is dissipating.

The red tide at Kat O Hoi and Tap Mun was formed by Prorocentrum mican which is common in Hong Kong waters and is non-toxic.

The red tide at Tolo Harbour was formed by Prorocentrum mican and Chattonella marina. Chattonella marina is rare in Hong Kong waters. Red tides formed by Chattonella marina were associated with some minor fish kills at fish culture zones in Hong Kong in 2001, a spokesman for the working group said.

AFCD informed mariculturists in the Yim Tin Tsai fish culture zone of the red tide and urged them to monitor the situation closely. No associated death of fish was reported.

Red tide is a natural phenomenon. The AFCD's proactive phytoplankton monitoring programme will continue monitoring red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry and the public.
