Red tide sighting
Friday, August 27, 2004

A red tide was sighted in Hong Kong waters in the past few days, an inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (August 27).

Observed by the staff of the Government Flying Service, Environmental Protection Department, and Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) at northeastern waters of Hong Kong on August 23, the red tide is dissipating.

"It is formed by Prorocentrum micans, a common species in Hong Kong waters which is non-toxic," a working group spokesman said.

AFCD has informed mariculturists in Sha Tau Kok, Kat O, Tap Mun, Kau Lau Wan and Sham Wan fish culture zones of the red tide and urged them to monitor the situation closely.

Red tide is a natural phenomenon. The AFCD's proactive phytoplankton monitoring programme will continue monitoring red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry.
