Red tides sighted
Friday, September 24, 2004

A red tide has been sighted in Hong Kong waters in the past few days, an inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (September 24).

Staff of the Environmental Protection Department observed a red tide at Shuen Wan Hoi on September 21. The red tide is dissipating today.

"The red tide was formed by Haematococcus pluvialis. The species is less common in Hong Kong and is non-toxic," a spokesman for the working group said.

Red tide is a natural phenomenon. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department's proactive phytoplankton monitoring programme will continue monitoring red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry and the public.
