Red tide sighting
Friday, October 8, 2004
A red tide was sighted in Hong Kong waters a few days ago, an inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (October 8).
The occurrence was observed in the Yim Tin Tsai (East) Fish Culture Zone by mariculturists on October 4, but it dissipated the following day.
"The red tide was formed by Haematococcus pluvialis. The species is less common in Hong Kong and is non-toxic," a spokesman for the working group said.
The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department has urged mariculturists in the Yim Tin Tsai area to monitor the situation closely.
Red tide is a natural phenomenon. The department's proactive phytoplankton monitoring programme will continue monitoring red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry and the public.
