Marine parks guided tours for teachers
Wednesday, February 10 , 1999
Two marine park guided tours will be organised for secondary school teachers in April to familiarise them with the marine environment in Hong Kong.
An Agriculture and Fisheries Department (AFD) spokesman today (Wednesday) said the tours would enable teachers to have more understanding of local marine resources and their conservation.
"Each group of about 30 participants will visit Hoi Ha Wan or Yan Chau Tong Marine Park, with AFD staff introducing the ecology and seascape of the park," said the spokesman.
"The personal experience teachers gained during the trip will be invaluable to them in teaching marine environment and conservation, both in classrooms and field trips."
He noted that AFD would also organise 20 guided tours for secondary school students within this year.
"We hope teachers participating in the teachers' tour can also organise their own trips for students as we expect great demand for guided tours for students.
"Teachers wishing to join our guided tours will be entertained on a first-come-first-serve basis."
The spokesman added that AFD's Marine Parks Division had recently produced an information kit on marine parks and marine reserve and would be distributed to secondary schools through the Education Department.
"The kit, prepared in both English and Chinese, composed of a CD Rom and a number of information notes and papers on marine parks and marine reserve as well as the marine biodiversity of Hong Kong."
The CD Rom contained detailed information on marine parks and marine reserve, their management and control, related rules, regulations and activities, as well as some 100 pictures of marine life, showing colourful and interesting parts of the world under water.
"We believe that the attractive materials will serve as useful teaching references for teachers to introduce the diversity of marine lives in a lively and easily understandable way."
Teachers interested in joining the guided tours and wish to get a copy of the information kit can call AFD's Marine Parks Division on 2733 2534 or 2733 2406.
