Red tide sighted
Friday, November 12, 2004

A red tide was sighted in Hong Kong waters yesterday, an inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (November 12).

The occurrence, observed in Deep Bay, is dissipating.

A spokesman for the working group said the red tide was formed by Navicula sp. "This is the first time this non-toxic species caused red tide in Hong Kong waters," he said.

Red tide is a natural phenomenon. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department's proactive phytoplankton monitoring programme will continue monitoring red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry and the public.
