Red tide sighted
Friday, January 7, 2005
A red tide was sighted in Hong Kong waters a few days ago, an inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (January 7).
It was seen in Hoi Ha Wan by members of the public on January 2 and dissipated on January 5.
"The red tide was formed by Noctiluca scintillans. The species is common in Hong Kong and is non-toxic," a spokesman for the working group said.
Red tide is a natural phenomenon. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department's proactive phytoplankton monitoring programme will continue monitoring red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry and the public.
