Red tides sighted
Saturday, February 12, 2005

Two red tides were sighted in Hong Kong waters during the past few days, an inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (February 12).

A red tide was observed at Sha Tin Hoi on February 7. Meanwhile mariculturists at Yim Tin Tsai observed another red tide at the fish culture zone on February 8. Both red tides dissipated on February 9.

Both red tides were formed by Heterocapsa rotundata, Heterosigma akashiwo and Plagioselmis prolonga. Heterosigma akashiwo is common in Hong Kong while Heterocapsa rotundata is rare and Plagioselmis prolonga is seldom seen in Hong Kong. All three species are non-toxic,_one to monitor the situation closely.

Red tide is a natural phenomenon. The AFCD's proactive phytoplankton monitoring programme will continue monitoring red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry and the public.
