Red tides sighted
Thursday, March 24, 2005

Two red tides have been sighted in Hong Kong waters in the past few days, an inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (March 24).

Staff of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) observed a red tide at Tung Ping Chau, Dapeng Wan on March 21. The red tide dissipated today.

The other sighting was observed at Hoi Ha Wan, Sai Kung on March 17. The red tide dissipated the following day.

" Both red tides were formed by Noctiluca scintillans. The species is common in Hong Kong and non-toxic," a spokesman for the working group said.

Red tide is a natural phenomenon. The AFCD's proactive phytoplankton monitoring programme will continue monitoring red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry and the public.
