Red tides sighted
Friday, April 1, 2005
Four red tides have been sighted in Hong Kong waters in the past few days, an inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (April 1).
Staff of the Civil Engineering and Development Department observed a red tide at Shing Mun River on March 28. The red tide dissipated the following day.
On March 29, staff of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) saw a red tide occuring at Tung Ping Chau and another at Hoi Ha Wan. The former dissipated the following day while the latter dissipated yesterday.
Also on March 29, staff of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department observed a red tide at Clear Water Bay First Beach. Red flag was hoisted. The red tide dissipated the following day.
"All four red tides were formed by Noctiluca scintillans. The species is common in Hong Kong and non-toxic," a spokesman for the working group said.
Red tide is a natural phenomenon. The AFCD's proactive phytoplankton monitoring programme will continue monitoring red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry and the public.
