Parks board briefed on Lantau north-south link
Thursday, March 25, 1999

The following is issued on behalf of the Country and Marine Parks Board:

The Country and Marine Parks Board were consulted on a detailed project study for a new road link between Tai Ho Wan and Mui Wo on Lantau Island at a board meeting on March 23 (Tuesday).

A spokesman for the Board said members were briefed on the study of five main alignment options in the northern part of the road link and five southern connections destined for Mui Wo.

The proposed project, which might pass through the Lantau North Country Park, was presented to the Board by the Highways and Transport Departments and a consultant in charge of the feasibility study.

After considering all the alignment options, the Board requested the two departments and the consultant to provide more detailed information on the environmental impact assessment, estimated costing and proposed mitigation measures on two alignment options.

The spokesman said the board would actively consider the new information it requested and, if necessary, would hold a special meeting or make site visits to assess the impact the proposed project would have on the country park.

At the meeting, Board members were also presented with the findings and recommendations of a research on Indo-Pacific Hump-backed Dolphin (Chinese White Dolphins) population.

Board members expressed great interest in the findings and urged the Government to continue its efforts in the conservation of the species.
