Red tide sighted
Friday, September 23, 2005

A red tide was sighted in Hong Kong waters on September 21, an inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (September 23).

The red tide at Tai Tau Chau Fish Culture Zone reported by a mariculturist dissipated the following day.

"It was formed by Ceratium furca. Red tide formed by it is common in Hong Kong waters and it is non-toxic," a spokesman for the working group said.

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) has urged mariculturists at the Tai Tau Chau Fish Culture Zone to monitor the situation closely.

Red tide is a natural phenomenon. The AFCD's proactive phytoplankton monitoring programme will continue monitoring red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry and the public.
