Red tides sighted
Friday, September 30, 2005

Three red tides have been sighted in Hong Kong waters in the past few days, an inter-departmental red tide working group reported today (September 30).

A mariculturist reported a red tide at Yim Tin Tsai Fish Culture Zone on September 27. The red tide still persists.

Staff of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department observed a red tide at Port Shelter on September 27 and another one at Tai Mei Tuk on September 29. The red tide at Port Shelter dissipated this morning and the one at Tai Mei Tuk still persists.

"All three red tides were formed by Ceratium furca. Red tide formed by it is common in Hong Kong waters and it is non-toxic," a spokesman for the working group said.

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) has urged mariculturists at the Yim Tin Tsai Fish Culture Zone to monitor the situation closely.

Red tide is a natural phenomenon. The AFCD's proactive phytoplankton monitoring programme will continue monitoring red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry and the public.
