Two birds test positive for H5N1 virus
Tuesday, February 26, 2007

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department said today (February 26) that the Chestnut Munia and the Scaly-breasted Munia found earlier were confirmed to be H5N1 positive after a series of laboratory tests.

The Chestnut Munia was collected by AFCD staff on February 18 in the vicinity of St Teresa's Hospital at Prince Edward Road West, Kowloon City following a public referral. The carcass of the Scaly-breasted Munia was found the next day at the junction of Sing Woo Road and Wong Nai Chung Road, Happy Valley.

A department spokesman reminded people to observe good personal hygiene.

"They should avoid personal contact with wild birds and live poultry and clean their hands thoroughly after coming into contact with them," he said.
