Parks board endorses potential marine parks priority
Wednesday, July 28, 1999
The following is issued on behalf of the Country and Marine Parks Board:
The Country and Marine Parks Board yesterday (Tuesday) endorsed a proposed
priority list for consideration of designating marine parks in the territory.
Board members were briefed at a board meeting yesterday the initial
findings of studies of potential marine parks at Ping Chau, Southwest
Lantau, South Lamma and Shelter Island Area.
A spokesman for the board said the studies, carried out by four local
tertiary institutes, found that the four sites each had their own biotic
and abiotic characteristics worthy for protection.
With the board's endorsement, the Country and Marine Parks Authority would
proceed to study the appropriate boundary of the individual site and carry
out other preparation work.
The spokesman noted that the Agriculture and Fisheries Department and a
consultant also presented to board members the major findings and proposals
of a study commissioned to identify suitable sites and management plans for
implementing phase two of the artificial reefs deployment project.
Board members were welcome to submit their comments and views to the
Department before the end of September when the consultation exercise would
expire.
