Friday, September 24, 1999

The following is issued on behalf of the Country and Marine Parks Board:

The Country and Marine Parks Board yesterday (September 23) considered at its board meeting recommendations proposed by the South West New Territories Development Strategy Review.

Representatives from the Planning Department, Transport Department and Environmental Protection Department have attended the meeting and briefed board members on major draft recommended strategies.

At the meeting, the board acknowledged proposal of about 55 per cent of land in the region would be existing country parks and areas identified for potential country parks.

Board members also noted plans for identifying potential marine parks as well as the possible development of a theme park and the related traffic and transport infrastructures in the region.

However, a spokesman for the board said members had expressed concern on the possible impacts of new development on existing natural environment.

"It is noted that the uniqueness and naturalness of Lantau Island where a great diversity of terrestrial and marine flora and fauna was found should be conserved.

"Man-made features and infrastructures sprang up from proposed developments should be kept to the minimal," he added.

The spokesman noted that the board would consolidate their comments for submission to the Planning Department.

At yesterday's meeting, board members also discussed the hiking safety issue.

The Agriculture and Fisheries Department noted that they were now working on sets of training courses for the public and hiking group leaders as part of the continuous effort of the department to promote hiking safety.
