AFCD introduces new vegetable varieties to local organic farmers
Tuesday, July 22, 2008

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) held a seminar for local farmers today (July 22) at its Tai Lung Experimental Station to introduce and demonstrate the organic cultivation methods of three premium vegetables, namely little cucumber, dark leaf Chinese white cabbage and leaf beet.

The newly introduced vegetables are suitable for cultivation in Hong Kong in the summer. They are fast-growing and give stable crop yields. Growing organically enhances their market potential and preliminary market response to these products is good.

Little cucumber is introduced from Thailand. The crop is well-adapted to a humid climate and good-yielding. The cylinder-shaped cucumber is whitish green and its flesh is thick and crisp. The cucumber can be eaten raw or cooked.

Dark leaf Chinese white cabbage was jointly selected by the AFCD and Hong Kong Seeds Trader Association. The plant has spade-like dark green leaves and is very tasty.

Leaf beet is introduced from Taiwan. The fast-growing crop is tolerant of hot weather and resistant to disease. The shape and taste of the jade-green vegetable resembles spinach.

The AFCD offered technical support to 11 organic farmers to grow these vegetables. The produce will be available in the market next month.

The AFCD continues to promote organic cultivation of premium vegetables to serve niche markets.
