Red tide sighting at Tolo Harbour
Friday, November 19, 1999

An inter-departmental red tide working group today (Friday) reported a red tide sighting within Hong Kong waters to keep the public well informed of the latest monitoring situation.

A spokesman for the working group said red tide was observed at Tolo Harbour near Yuen Chau Tsai by staff of the Environmental Protection Department on November 15 but it had dissipated the next day.

The red tide sighted is composed mainly of Mesodinium rubrum, a species which is non-toxic.

"The species has been sighted in Hong Kong waters before but led to no associated fish kill," he said.

he spokesman noted that the extent of the affected area was small and it was far away from fish culture zones.

No gazetted beaches had been affected by the red tide.

The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon and AFD's pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring system would continue monitoring red tide occurrence to minimise its impact on mariculture industry.
