Four red tide sightings reported

An inter-departmental red tide working group today (Friday) reported four red tide sightings within Hong Kong waters to keep the public well informed of the latest monitoring situation.
A spokesman for the working group said a red tide was observed by staff of the Agriculture and Fisheries Department (AFD) at Kat O, Sai Kung on December 10.
AFD alerted all mariculturists of the O Pui Tong fish culture zone and they confirmed that the fishes in the zone were normal.
The red tide was formed by Mesodinium rubrum and it is non-toxic.
Another red tide formed by the same species was observed at the Clear Water Bay Second Bay on December 13 by staff of the Regional Services Department. Red flag was hoisted at the Second Beach due to sighting of the red tide.
The third red tide formed by the same species was spotted at Deep Water Bay near Ocean Park on December 14.
He said the three red tides had all disappeared after a few days.
"The species has been sighted in Hong Kong waters before but led to no associated fish kill," the spokesman said.
"AFD will continue monitoring the situation to minimise its impact on the mariculture industry in Hong Kong," he added.
The fourth sighting of red tide occurred near the Banyan Bridge of Shing Mun River in Sha Tin on December 13.
The red tide was formed by Prorocentrum minimum and Prorocentrum dentatum which are also non-toxic.
The spokesman said red tide was a natural phenomenon and the AFD had already set up a pro-active and comprehensive phytoplankton monitoring system last year to monitor red tide occurrence in Hong Kong.
