How many dolphins are there in Hong Kong waters and in the Pearl River Estuary?
Line Transect Estimates
- Over the past 10 years, the abundance of Chinese white dolphins ranged between 32 and 87 based on Line Transect survey method. Annual abundance of Chinese white dolphins in Hong Kong can be found in the Marine Mammals Monitoring Reports published by the Department
- The highest dolphin density is found in west Lantau waters
- There are about 1300 to 1500 dolphins found in the eastern part of the Pearl River Estuary and Hong Kong waters
- The above estimates does not include dolphins found in the western estuary, near Macau and Zhuhai. Including the western estuary, there are about 2500 dolphins inhabiting the Pearl River Estuary
Photo-identification
- There are more than 1100 identified dolphins in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Estuary
- An example of individual dolphin with high number of re-sightings (EL01). There are over 120 re-sightings of this dolphin since 1996. Newly identified dolphins are still being added to the photo-identification catalogue
