Field characteristics: Colonies are massive, submassive or encrusting. Colonies can have a smooth or bumpy appearance.Corallites are small, conical and give the impression of miniature volcanoes. This species exhibits a wide range of colour variations from dark to light brown, green or grey. Sometimes corallite centres have a lighter colour as compared to the overall colour of the colony.
Abundance: Dominant
Distribution : This species has an extensive geographic range recorded from western to northeastern waters of Hong Kong. This species is a common component of well-established coral communities as well as existing in the more marginal coral habitats of Hong Kong. Present in the three marine parks of Hoi Ha Wan, Yan Chau Tong and Tung Ping Chau.
