Ecological Mitigation Measures

Deep Bay Link (DBL)

Objective of the Ecological Mitigation Measure:

To compensate for the loss of abandoned fishponds by on-site creation and enhancement of wetland habitats.

Details:

The mitigation wetland to be provided for the loss of abandoned fishponds consists of newly created ponds and re-profiled shallow pond habitats for waterbirds. Fish stocking will be carried out to control mosquito and provide more feeding opportunity for waterbirds, and native wetland vegetation will be established in the mitigation wetland. Several bamboo stands will also be established to provide potential roosting/nesting sites for ardeids. The creation and management of the mitigation wetland is guided by a Habitat Creation and Management Plan (HCMP). Ecological monitoring programme will be carried out in accordance with the requirements of the HCMP.

Results:

The mitigation wetland is being established for subsequent management by AFCD. The ecological monitoring programme is expected to commence in 2007.
