AFCD has been consistently offering targeted training for fishermen and facilitating their participation in leisure fisheries projects and activities, aims to provide practical experience and support their transition to leisure fisheries.
Fishermen can apply for funding support from the Sustainable Fisheries Development Fund (SFDF) to explore the development of new leisure fisheries activities and operating models. Two ongoing projects related to leisure fisheries include one focuses on promoting pearl farming development integrated with eco-tourism, and another centered in the Southern District aims at developing community-based leisure fisheries through collaboration with local stakeholders to plan and promote leisure fisheries-related activities.
Tai Po and Sham Wan Leisure Fisheries Experiential Tours
AFCD has been co-operating with local organisations and groups to jointly design integrated itineraries with local characteristics, encompassing “eating, playing, shopping and learning” and combining different island tours, eco-tours, “Fishing Village” tours, leisure and cultural tours, and festive events, etc., so as to provide the public with rich and diversified leisure experiences.
In the Summer of 2025, AFCD launched the "Leisure Fisheries Professional Interpreter Training Program", successfully trained 16 fishermen to become tour interpreters. In collaboration with the Hong Kong Fishermen Consortium and GO PARK Sports, two engaging public experience tours were introduced: " Tai Po Fish Raft Getaway " and "Tap Mun & Sham Wan Pearl and Fisheries Culture Expedition". Led by fishermen guides, participants will have the opportunity to learn and engage in captured fisheries, mariculture and cultural activities, and experience the concept of 'tourism is everywhere' in Hong Kong.
This collaboration marks the first joint effort among the government, fisheries and business sectors, leveraging each party's strengths to provide an enjoyable and family-friendly leisure fisheries tourism experience, working together to promote the development of leisure fisheries in Hong Kong.
